WHAT IS DEGREES OF FREEDOM...

 Hey guys,

Today we are talking about the degrees of freedom which is dof''s. The dof is the freedom of any point that it wants to move in a particular direction. The maximum number of logically independent values, which are values that have the freedom to vary. In the CAD or designing of any component, it is very important to understand about the dof. If we don't consider it may lead to failure. Also in FEA, the dof is very important in terms of calculating the result of getting the proper values from the mesh. The principle of meshing works on the dof. In which each node has its own dof. We will be going to talk about the mesh and why mesh is important and how it works later on in detail. But in short, the mesh is the important part in which it divides the modal into the element and nodes so that at each node we can extract the result from it. The nodes are points created by elements. Going back to the dof, each node has its own dof. We know that we have the 12 no of dof in which, if we consider only +ve one then we have 6 dof which is  3 translational (X, Y, Z) and 3 Rotational (Rot.x, Rot.y, Rotz )

Let's consider the object which is fixed at one end and the force is applied at the point P which is on the object. When we can say that we know the solution to any problem?

If and only if when we know the deformed position of each and every particle completely.

So, The minimum no of parameters required to define the position of any object of any entity completely in the space is known as dof.

So in FEA for the nodes, the formula is given as

The total dof of the given mesh model=No of nodes * dof of per node.

Also, the important point here to remember that not always all the elements have 6 dof per nodes. Dof depends on the type of element also whether it is 1D,2D,3D, Family of elements and the type of analysis performed. like in thermal analysis there is only 1 dof available. We will be talking about this all, like elements nodes and how dof varies from type to type and to nodes. until stay tuned guys.
